Wow...the first Scary Mix. It brings back great memories. It all started so long ago when Dstln had a premonition of sorts. He enjoyed making his little 'music mixes' with his little 'cd-burner,' but he knew that there had to be something more important. Then he randomly heard 'Scatman' and 'U Can't Touch This.' Two Words: Scary Mix.
Then Dstln traveled to far-off lands (ie: Napster) to find the strangest and funniest music possible to use for the mix. He encountered some pretty odd rarities, but the most important Scary Mix songs still prove to be the first four tracks. The combination of McHammer, Scatman, the A-Team theme song and Vanilla ice made the first Scary Mix impossible to ignore or deny. After the first tracks, Dstln added some more tv themes/commercials, odd songs either found or referenced by friends, and some 'regular' scary music at the end. These regular songs were, for the most part, only put on the mix to take up space. 'Race Car Ya-Yas' indeed belong on the mix, but the rest would otherwise be questionable (except for Closer). With the disk made and cd player in pocket, Dstln was ready to show off his newest creation at the high school's History Club trip to a Civil War re-enactment.
Scary Mix's premier originally looked like it might be a complete failure. Dstln's batteries were dead and despite valient efforts, he simply could not find any place on the trip to buy batteries. The trip was nearing a close and group decided to start heading back. All seemed lost. But then someone told Dstln that he could take the van. There was a cd player in the van. Without thinking, Dstln instinctively put the cd in the player and cranked up the volume (well, up from nothing). That's when the magic happened. The songs began to play and everyone was drawn in. The entire ride back was filled with singing and laughter. It was amazing. Overall, all the passengers in the van thoroughly enjoyed the cd and had a great time. That's when Dstln realized Scary Mix's true power. Each song just led to curiousity for the next song, which was rewarded with an endless supply of 'scaryness'. SM1 was later played during more History Club events and in countless car rides. After this start, there was no doubt that second would need to arrive...
